Social relevance has been lost in todays cinema. Is this  a big issue? May not be where everyone has a computer or iphone but places where everyday life is struggle and every ounce of food is hard earned. This is so true in India where most of the population like with 20-30 pounds per month. Their only source of knowledge has been the Television and Films. It is so part of the people, that film actors have become successful politicians. So there is a bigger responsibility on the movie makers these days!
But are they up to this challenge? I think not. I hate the Bollywood movies as it about the rich people or NRIs. Karah Johar is the worst film maker in India. He sucks Indian people's emotions to make money. His movies are about rich people's problems. They are so ultra rich that these people in India can be easily counted. Poverty, Education, Social inequality , Freedom and Discrimination still are relevant in our society. I am very sorry to say that India is the most racist country in the world. We are racist towards poverty, caste and religion. Colour of skin is the biggest issue in our country. I doubt if we would have accepted a immigirant or a different colored person to administer us.
Uthiripookal made in 1979 is a landmark in Tamil cinema. J. Mahendran was brave enough to make a bold movie with no Heroism. Can todays film makers ready to make such movies ?. It has so much social relevance. A person who cannot sit for a hour in school for education can watch 3 hours of film non-stop. I think there is a better chance to reach out and educate through movies. This movie is like a eye to the society with no over-play.
This may the time when Ilayaraja was learning his trade and we can hear that. There is very little BGM or orchestration but the songs are beautiful. The camera takes care of showing the mood or the lack of it. It keeps us guessing as most of the characters just emote enough to keep it going. There is no over-play of sadness or happiness. Neither does the music add to it. Technically, its a good watch for a 1979 movie. I think Bharathiraja followed this era. The visuals of the village are real.
I don't want to comment on the content as I leave for all you to watch it make your own mind. The last scene where the Father asks their kids to study well and tells them that he is going for a bath is example of simple and effective screenplay. The best dialogues are delivered surprisingly by Saruhasan and the best is "I want to be their father and not their broker". I can keep on saying about each and every character, but again ... I leave it to you. This is no surprising as the story has been adopted from Pulamai pittan's short story, "Chittrannai". Again reasons for movie makers to look for better story writers. Afterall movie is not about hero loving heroine or bashing villians or being unemployed and disrespectful to his father.
Need for change in our society is huge. This has given so much to us. I just remember the dialogue from Devar magan where Sivaji says to kamal about what have you given back to this society. In todays world where social relevance is lost , its not far away that we will become like Uthiri pookal! I think time for our "Inception" is far away as our dreams are mostly, food for 3 times a day and proper cloth to wear for most of the population.

I had watched this movie when I was young enough, not to remember
much. It was like a man coming back from a amnesia, remembering what
he saw in the past. This one is movie to be preserved. I hope I can
show this to my grandson and daughters. I hope the world doesn't
change much then and they can appreciate this art.
I don't think I can critic or comment on this movie. I think its very
Godly. If there is a God, he was working in full harmony when he made
them make this movie. Kamalhasan, a great actor make us believe how a
autistic person will be. Radhika has few words to say and she wins
over kamal most of the time. Its a incredible achievement in itself.
The director Viswanath, seems to be inspired by God himself and every
word he has written is pure magic. This movie originally made in
Telugu, made me love this language. Sadly, Telugu is my mother tongue
and I never appreciated it.
Last but not the least, God seems to have worked his wonders when
playing his musical instruments. With Ilayaraja it will never get
better than this. For a guy who doubts whether God really exists, this
made me believe that he really exists for 2 hours and 50 minutes. No
words. Its available online and searchable by Google. It was released
when i was 3 years old and I want my innocence back!
